The Moon Daily Editorial Team produces Moon Daily's coverage of lunar exploration and science. We report on Artemis, landers and the Gateway, commercial lunar payloads, and the science of lunar geology, regolith and water ice. Articles reflect our team's collective editorial process, source verification, drafting, technical review, and editing, rather than a single writer's work. Washington DC (SPX) Jul 09, 2010 - The lunar module Orion landed in the Descartes Highlands of the moon on April 21, 1972. The Apollo 16 mission targeted a highland region. Originally thought to be a volcanic site, the samples returned by Apollo 16 actually indicated that the highlands of the moon primarily consist of impact-formed rocks (breccias), a substantial scientific result.

Washington (AFP) July 6, 2010 - NASA has abandoned plans to return to the Moon but videogamers can explore the lunar landscape with a free new online game released by the US space agency.

Pasadena CA (JPL) Jul 02, 2010 - In a new analysis of a lunar sample collected by Apollo 17, researchers have detected and dated carbon on the moon in the form of graphite - the sooty stuff of pencil lead - which survived from around 3.8 billion years ago, when the moon was heavily bombarded by meteorites.

London, Canada (SPX) Jun 30, 2010 - Western professor Gordon Osinski (Earth Sciences, Physics AND Astronomy) is leading a Canadian science team in developing a robotic arm that will potentially be used by NASA to obtain rock samples from the moon.

Tempe AZ (SPX) Jun 25, 2010 - All cameras are susceptible to scattered light. You may have seen scattered light in pictures you have taken looking towards the Sun. Sunlight reflects off the optics and sometimes off the structure of the lens, and often appears as a gradient of brightness across the image. Attaching a baffle to your camera, like we did with the LROC Wide and Narrow Angle Cameras, can minimize this effect.

Washington DC (SPX) Jun 17, 2010 - Scientists at the Carnegie Institution's Geophysical Laboratory, with colleagues, have discovered a much higher water content in the Moon's interior than previous studies.

Washington DC (SPX) Jun 15, 2010 - NASA-funded scientists estimate from recent research that the volume of water molecules locked inside minerals in the moon's interior could exceed the amount of water in the Great Lakes here on Earth.

Greenbelt MD (SPX) Jun 11, 2010 - In exploration, sometimes you find more than what you're looking for, including things that shouldn't be there. As the Apollo 17 astronauts orbited over the night side of the moon, with the sun just beneath the horizon right before orbital sunrise, Eugene Cernan prepared to make observations of sunlight scattered by the sun's thin outer atmosphere and interplanetary dust from comets and collisions between asteroids.

Hampton VA (SPX) Jun 09, 2010 - What goes up must come down, and it will be NASA Langley Research Center's job to make sure that when astronauts return from space, they land safely. On June 8, NASA Langley will break ground on a $1.7 million Hydro Impact Basin that will serve to validate and certify that future space vehicles, such as NASA's Orion crew module, are designed for safe water landings.

Copenhagen, Denmark (SPX) Jun 08, 2010 - The Earth and Moon were created as the result of a giant collision between two planets the size of Mars and Venus. Until now it was thought to have happened when the solar system was 30 million years old or approx. 4,537 million years ago.
