Shanghai Lands Star Role In Satellite Mission

Beijing (XNA) Jun 14, 2006 - Shanghai will be the headquarters of the satellite positioning equipment used to track the country's first lunar orbiter, due to be launched next April, officials said Monday. The lunar orbiter positioning system uses four radio telescopes - in Shanghai, Beijing, Kunming, capital of southwest China's Yunnan Province, and Urumqi, capital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in the northwest.

SMART-1 Captures Central Peaks Of Zucchius Crater

Paris, France (SPX) Jun 02, 2006 - This image, taken by the Advanced Moon Imaging Experiment on board ESA's SMART-1 spacecraft, shows the central peaks of the lunar crater Zucchius. AMIE obtained the image last Jan. 14 from a distance of about 753 kilometers (467 miles) from the surface, with a ground resolution of 68 meters (216 feet) per pixel.

Lunar Highlands And Mare Landscapes

Paris, France (SPX) May 29, 2006 - These two images, taken by the advanced Moon Imaging Experiment aboard ESA's SMART-1 spacecraft, show the difference between lunar highlands and a mare area from close by. The first image, showing highlands, was obtained by AMIE on Jan. 22 from a distance of about 1,112 kilometers (690 miles) from the surface, with a ground resolution of 100 meters (325 feet) per pixel.

China Completes Radio Telescope For Moon-Probe Project

Kunming, China (XNA) Apr 24, 2006 - Chinese scientists in early April completed the main part of a high-tech radio telescope which will serve China's ambitious moon-probe project scheduled for launch in 2007. The 45-meter tall telescope weighs 400 tons and measures 40 meters in diameter of the antenna. It's located in southwest China's Yunnan Province and is the country's second largest radio telescope. The largest is being built in Beijing.
