Time capsule lunar samples reveal new insights into Moon's ancient past

Samples collected from the Moon by the Apollo 16 mission more than 50 years ago have helped scientists reconstruct billions of years of lunar history. Researchers analyzed lunar breccias, a type of rock created by asteroid impacts, to understand the Moon's surface changes over time. Apollo 16 astronauts John Young, Charles Duke, and Ken Mattingly brought over 95 kg of samples back to Earth in 1972.
