China To Finish High-Res Topographic Lunar Map By September
Beijing (XNA) Aug 10, 2009
China will complete a 3D topographic map of the moon by the end of September, according to a chief designer with the project on Wednesday, calling the map the "clearest" in the world. "Currently, most of the lunar topographic maps were made by data acquired by laser altimeter instruments. With the large amount of highly-detailed images taken by Chang'e-1, the map we are making will be of ... read more

Unsung Hero Of Moon Mission Is Sad But Forgiving
Bangalore, India (IANS) Aug 04, 2009
In the nine months India's Chandrayaan-1 has been circling the moon everyone connected with it has been awarded, rewarded or interviewed on TV, except the scientist whose pioneering work in liquid propulsion was pivotal to the mission's success. Perhaps it had something to do with the false spying charges under which he was arrested in 1994. It may seem odd but Nambi Narayanan who introduc ... more

    Field Testing For The Moon
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 03, 2009
When President Kennedy announced on Sept. 12, 1962, that the United States would go to the moon before the end of the decade, life and work at NASA changed in monumental ways. By then, NASA had four manned spaceflights under its belt. A trip to the moon would leverage years of spaceflight knowledge, but traveling out of low Earth orbit, past Geosynchronous orbit to the moon, would demand increas ... more

Things You Never Knew About The First Moon Landing
Canberra, Australia (SPX) Jul 24, 2009
Forty years ago this month a mighty Saturn-5 rocket blasted off with the force of one hundred locomotives propelling two men into history! They became the first human beings to ever set foot on another world. This was the first Moon landing. No-one had ever done this before. Would they land OK? Would they crash? Would they sink into the lunar soil? NASA gave them a 50-50 chance at best. ... more
